Guest Posting: Handmade Halloween

I'm thrilled today to be guest posting over at Feather's Flights as part of the Handmade Halloween Series. Heather and Palak (Make it Handmade) have guest posts each day this week!

I'm sharing past Halloween costumes my mom and I have created. (Mostly Mom. I just offer moral support.) I'm also sharing a sneak peek of this year's inspiration. (Hint: They want to be "bad guys." Again.)

Last year's parrot costume is my personal favorite, and I published a mini-tutorial here on the blog last October. I thought I'd share it again today!

It's essentially a feather-covered poncho.

Here's the inside:

She cut the poncho shape out of fleece. It's longer and rounded for the back, and shorter and squared off for the front. Somehow she got the neck hole the right size. (I totally would have failed at that.) The arms are about 3/4-sleeve length on Eliza.

My mom's philosophy, especially when making costumes, is "why sew what you can glue or staple." She hot-glued feather boas to the right side of the poncho. Then she hot-glued ribbons to either side of the arms and the sides of the poncho on the inside. They tie and secure once on the baby.

Here's what the side and sleeve look like when tied.

For the parrot's head, she started with a purple knit cap and hand sewed on a feather mohawk. Then she stuffed and hand stitched the beak, which is made of firmer weight felt. She hand sewed the beak to the front of the cap, then she glued more feathers and felt eyes around it.

Finally, she bought a basic red long-sleeved t-shirt and purple leggings to wear under it. (We've got yellow tights that we'll add over the leggings.)

Palak and Heather are posting a Rafflecopter giveaway as part of the series, and I've contributed this awesome Organ Grinder's Monkey costume to the package. (Daniel wore it two years ago. It's a size 2.) I'm so excited to think that somebody else's little one will enjoy this costume!

Here's the rest of the week's line-up. Happy Handmade Halloween, everyone!

  1. That parrot costume is amazing! Feather boas are brilliant to cut down the work! I never work have thought of that!
